AVID is a curriculum program designed for students in the academic middle who want to do well in school. This elective class provides students with organizational support, academic support, and skills support to help them excel in rigorous courses and be prepared for college. AVID classes include instruction and reinforcement in organizational strategies, tutoring sessions in all academic subjects, and individual instruction on areas of needed improvement. The typical AVID students starts the program with a GPA of 1.8-2.9 and is at least partially proficient in Math, Reading and Writing. The AVID student must also want to do well in school - individual desire or determination is the cornerstone for success. Finally, the AVID student has parents who are willing to participate in a montly parent meeting and to support the AVID teachers in reinforcing AVID strategies at home.
To join AVID, a student must complete an application and participate in an interview. Sixth Grade AVID selection occurs in January of each year, while selection to participate in Seventh or Eighth Grade AVID occurs in April.
